MODULATING BY-PASS DAMPER SYSTEM

Alternative Energy Saving System

The Modulating By-Pass Damper System is an alternative to the Syncroflow Sash System.

Although there are now several similar designs on the market, the principle is the same as that which was conceived in our own workshop many years ago and is protected by a certified patent.

The system incorporates a motorised damper installed near the exhaust fan in a separate by-pass branch which allows outside air to by-pass the fume cupboard to maintain a constant 0.5 m/s velocity of air passing through the working aperture of the fume cupboard regardless of the position of the sash.

The motorised damper is controlled by an enclosed electronic device activated directly by sash movement, as with the standard Syncroflow System. It can also be controlled by a sensor inside the fume cupboard.

The control system, incorporating the enclosed electronic device, is the most positive and maintenance free method of control. It is mounted outside the fume cupboard chamber and is activated directly by the sash movement (Patent protected). This method of control allows the motorised damper to act in a more responsive manner as small movements of the sash can be detected electronically. There is also no sensor mounted in the fume cupboard to be affected by dust, chemical fume or contaminates.

A shortfall in the modulating by-pass damper system is that energy savings, associated with the reduction of consumed fan horsepower, are not realised as they are with the Syncroflow Sash System. This is because the exhaust fan runs continually at full speed, and its consumed horsepower is unchanged throughout the operation.

As well, because the fan is running continuously at full speed, there is no reduction in noise.

Based on our experience of both systems and customer feed back, the Sycroflow System is more cost effective to install, quieter in operation and cheaper to run and maintain. It is for these reasons that the Syncroflow System has been awarded the Australian Design Award three consecutive times before 1992, was the first product in Australia to win the new Australian Design Mark 1993, then gained the "best of the best" Australian Design Award 1994 and is a current Australian Design Mark holder.

Chemical Fume Handling Equipment recommends the use of the Syncroflow Sash System with its trouble free and economic operation, but should the modulating by-pass damper system be preferred it can be provided with the patented electronic sash control.
